Sozopol
Sozopol is situated on two picturesque peninsulas, 30 km. sout-east from Bourgas.The town was founded by the ancient Greeks in 610 B.C., bearing the name of the God Apolo. Here lived and created the ancient Greek philosopher Anaximander. Part of the evidences for the rich historic past are kept in the historic museum. Other sites that have to be visited are the Ancient Necropolis, St. Mary church and south fortress wall. In the area of Sozopol it is still kept in the ancient religious ritual-dancing on live coals that can be seen.

Around Sozopol there are 6 fantastic beaches covered in thin sand and dunes. There aren't any dangerous for the men species in the Black sea. From the sea coasts starts Strandja mountain, as 70% of its territory is covered in woods. This is the only place in Europe where the pont-evksin flora of the Caucasus thrives. Only here you can see the rare Strandja oak tree, considered by the scientists, as the very ancestor of all European oaks. One of the most important bird-routes passes through Sozopol - Via Pontica. The lakes near the town enter the category of naturally and ornithologically important places in accordance with the world ecological standards. The unique flora and colourful fauna are preserved in the biggest Bulgarian natural park "Strandja", 7 reserves and other protected territories. |
